Why do I want to sew??

My lovely Grandma Kezerian gave me a sewing machine! It was really great timing, because I recently decided I wanted to learn to sew. Since being pregnant I am realizing how much it is to buy baby bedding, blankets, etc. It is so spendy! I was talking to my mom and my sister, Kelli about how I wanted to buy a sewing machine and teach myself. I want to be crafty and know how to sew buttons on and hem pants and make fun things. The next few days my grandma told me she could give me one! It's a Singer 328k made in the early 1960s! All growing up my mom sewed pretty much everything. I am regretting not letting her teach me! I was never interested back then, and should have taken advantage of the knowlege mom could have shared. I have called my poor mom tons of times in the last week asking her sewing questions! She is trying to help me without even knowing what my machine looks like or anything.

(This is not my machine, but exactly like it!) I am making a rag quilt. I thought it would be really easy, but I hadn't taken into consideration I don't know what I am doing! The sewing machine already had thread and a bobbin in it when I got it. It was white thread and I wanted to use Ivory, but I saved a step of learning how to wind the bobbin and just used the white. I thought the thing was broken, but I was doing a friend Sarah's hair, and she showed me how to work the thing! (THANKS!) All was going along just great when the bobbin ran out of thread halfway through sewing my rows together!! UGH! I managed to figure out how to make a new bobbin, but I must have done it wrong or something because now my stitch is all messed up! It's bunching on the bobbin thread on the bottom, and my stitch looks like it's not even a stitch on the top! It's just a line with the bottom meeting up with it. So it's not meeting in the middle with the top and bottom thread. Does that even make sense!? I have been staying up until really late the last few nights working on this quilt and I am so sick of messing with this stupid stitch problem and not even knowing what the heck to do. The user's manual (with lovely cartoon images of 60s girls in aprons and stuff) says the bobbin might be too tight or loose. I got out a screw driver and messed with the tightness of the bobbin, but nothing seems to be helping. My mom said maybe I made the bobbin too loose and I need to re do it. It's slowing me down! I need my mom closer! WHY am I even doing this!??

i give you a lot of credit. i always wanted to know how to sew and do fun stuff...make cute bags.. but i haven't gotten the motivation to learn and my grandma has a really nice machine too! so let me know how it all works out. i don't have any advice for you (since i've never done it) but from what i understand, it gets a lot easier the more you do it!

I'm so glad you're getting into sewing because I want to start sewing too and this way you can give me some pointers! I'm hoping to find a good one that isn't too expensive! I can't wait to see pics of your finished blanket!! The fabrics are soo cute!

Sweing is soooo much fun! I have really gotten into it simce I had kids and once you start to understand how your machine works a bit more it will be alot easier. Don't give up! It saves some money when you kids get old enough to want dress up clothes or for Halloween. Have you taken your machine to a fabric store? Most of the time the ladies there are really nice and helpful, they would probably help you out. Any way , thats great that your sewing, it really is fun!

My mom uses an old Singer and says she'll never get a modern machine because they don't compare. My mother is a wonderful sewer as well and I didn't pick up as much from her as I wish I would have. Good luck and keep going, you'll get the hang of it and love it!

Lori! That is so awesome. You are in the same boat as me. My parents gave me one for my birthday! I have made a few projects and I am starting a big one. Its so fun learning, but it is so hard at the same time.
I am planning on making all my baby bedding someday when we have a baby. I know a really great place with super cute fabric. Let me know if you need any tips. Or great fabric stores.

definately sounds like a tension setting problem - but that is a NICE maching - score! I don't have time to see if someone already suggested, but they have classes at Joannes fabric stores that are pretty cheap and good starting points - way to be ambitious - sewing as a blast. I've been sewing for awhile, and tried to start a quilt and got overwhelmed, so it's still sitting in Iowa in pieces. Way to go!

I am so proud of you for learning how to sew. I am trying to learn too, but I stuggle with creativity. Let me know how it goes.

I learned to sew while I was younger. My mom used to sew everything for us too. Although it was probably because I was one of the oldest and at the time we didn't have the money to get all sorts of clothes. I like to sew, but I am to much of a perfectionist that it sometimes drives me nuts!!! Jimmy wanted to get me a sewing machine and I told him not to, I don't know how often I would use one and my mom has one if I do. Good luck with your projects!!!
